A Message from the Athletics Director

Eric Gobiel, Athletics Director on July 17, 2020

Dear Nichols Community,

After careful consideration with our Nichols administration, and the Commonwealth Coast Conference Board of Directors, it is with great disappointment that I must announce that our fall athletic programs (men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball) must postpone intercollegiate competition for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is our hope to be able to resume these seasons during the spring semester of 2021 but first need improved public health conditions and NCAA approval, which has yet to be determined.

In the coming weeks, our athletics department will continue to work in conjunction with the CCC to develop guidelines on how to safely provide our athletes with fall non-traditional practice seasons upon their return to campus. Although this may look different from years past, please know we are committed to providing these opportunities for our student athletes while following both NCAA and Massachusetts state health protocols.

This decision will also impact the start of our winter athletic programs (men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s ice hockey) during the fall 2020 semester. When we see improved public health conditions and relevant NCAA guidance, we hope to begin competition for these programs as early as January 1, 2021. As we move through the semester, Nichols will also continue re-evaluate our postponed programs to determine if they can be resumed in the winter/spring of 2021.

We cannot express the significance of our disappointment at this time but look forward to seeing all of our Bison programs back on the fields/courts/ice soon.

With Bison Pride,

Eric Gobiel
Director of Athletics
