A Message from the Vice President for Academic Affairs

March 16, 2021

One year ago today, we announced that all classes would be moving to an online, remote learning platform. In that message, we introduced Zoom, a product we weren’t too familiar with then, but one we’ve all become experts in using. In June 2020, we re-designed the fall schedule to bring you back to campus while meeting safety guidelines including mask wearing, social distancing, testing, HyFlex availability of classes, etc. This illustrates that we can adjust to circumstances as needed, but also that we can be successful at forecasting what our situation will be.

Next Friday, March 26, the Fall 2021 course schedule will be released and registration will take place April 12-14. The schedule has approximately 350 classes, of which 310 will be offered in-person. All classes are synchronous (taking place at a scheduled time). Nichols focuses on an experiential curriculum, which is best facilitated in the classroom. We believe learning is best achieved as a collaborative exercise between students and the faculty. This is only feasible in a synchronous class environment and is best delivered in-person. We will ensure all classrooms will be ready for students and faculty with appropriate safety guidelines in place when we resume learning on August 30, 2021.

Best wishes for a successful finish to the spring semester.

Mauri S. Pelto, Ph.D.
Vice President for Academic Affairs
